Bamidele Victor Owoyele is a Professor of Physiology and Neuroscience and the Dean of the Postgraduate School at the University of Ilorin. He is currently the president of two multidisciplinary societies -the Neuroscience Society of Nigeria and the Society for the Study of Pain, Nigeria.
His contributions to the field of physiology have been recognized with a fellowship from the Physiological Society of the United Kingdom. Prof. Owoyele’s research has focused on acute and chronic pain and neuroinflammatory diseases. He has extensive publications on the ameliorative effects of indigenous plants (Ten selected papers (TSP) 1, 2) and combined therapeutic agents (5,7,9,10) on pain and inflammatory diseases. He is a foremost national leader in experimental research on neuropathic pain.
Having investigated this in rodents and patients (TSP 3,5,6,7,8,9). He identified key roles for neutrophils and cytokines in the pathogenesis of chronic pain and inflammation in sub-populations of people in southwest Nigeria (TSP 3). His publications were among the most widely cited in the field of pain (TSP 7) and neuroscience, as reported by the journal publishers. His research has also contributed significantly to unravelling the importance of vitamins (TSP 4) and trace elements (TSP 8) in the management of Parkinson’s disease.
His Neuroscience laboratory at the University of Ilorin is designated by the International Parkinson and Movement Disorders Society as a training Centre for postgraduate students. He oversees the activities of the International Brain Research Organization as the Chair of the Regional Committee for Africa. In this role, he is responsible for promoting neuroscience across the continent, the first African-based scientist to hold this position. He has supervised B.Sc. Students’ project (>400), M.Sc. dissertations (24) and Ph.D. Thesis (12). He has published >150 articles in reputable journals, has Google Scholar >3322 citations, an i10-index of 55 and an H-Index of 30.
