Moshood Tijani, a Professor of Geology at the University of Ibadan, is an expert on groundwater resources evaluation, development, and management. His work on the hydraulic characteristics and environmental quality evaluation of groundwater systems has thrown great light on the pattern and quality of groundwater occurrences in the Basement Complex areas in Nigeria.
He established the influence of bedrock types, fracturing and the degree of weathering on groundwater occurrences, geogenic chemical and isotopic composition of groundwater systems. Tijani has extensively studied the effects of climate change, land-use changes, over-abstraction of groundwater, saltwater intrusion and contaminations from in-house wastes in coastal areas of southwestern Nigeria. His work has given strong backing to the formulation of guidelines regarding environmental contamination and protection of groundwater systems in Nigeria.
Tijani has been actively involved in numerous international research projects, including the UK-NERC funded Project with the British Geological Survey (BGS); Dutch DUCP3 Project with IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, The Netherlands; UKRI’s Global Challenges Project and HEFCW (Higher Education Funding Council for Wales) ODA Grant with the Cardiff University, UK.
He led the Nigerian section of a landmark work “The Compilation of Africa Groundwater Atlas” and this remains the most visited and cited country’s profile. He is a Consultant to UNESCO on Groundwater and Climate Change Thematics.
At the continental level, Tijani worked with the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) as Senior Policy Adviser on Groundwater and Climate Lead, (2020-2023), where he coordinated the Pan-African Groundwater Programme (APAGroP) for sustainable management of groundwater resources in the Africa.
Tijani has received many Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship awards/grants and has published extensively with 2885 citations on Google Scholar and h-index of 25. A Fellow of many national and international professional/learned organizations. He has supervised 44 MSc and 4 PhD candidates.
